Fireproof, a division of Tin Technology, will be promoting its latest fire testing and polymer compounding services at the ‘Fire Resistance in Plastics 2007’ conference. This event is to be held in Cologne, Germany, on the 19th to the 21st November. Fireproof will be holding a tabletop exhibition (table 7) and a presentation will be given by Dr. Paul Cusack on ‘novel inorganic tin-based flame retardants and smoke suppressants’ on the 20th November.
Fireproof has a comprehensive range of small-scale fire tests in its laboratories based at the offices of Tin Technology, in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. This fire-testing laboratory, along with its processing and compounding facilities, also provides comprehensive mechanical testing and chemical analytical services to industry.
“The ‘Fire Resistance in Plastics’ conference is an ideal international forum for us to promote our fire testing and polymer compounding facilities,” comments Dr Paul Cusack, Research Manager at Fireproof. “Today many flame retardants are now subjected to increasing levels of environmental control, and I will be emphasising how certain inorganic tin compounds are finding increasing use, particularly as non-toxic, halogen-free systems for many polymer applications.”
The techniques and tests offered by Fireproof can be divided into 3 sections: Fire Testing, Polymer Processing, and Chemical Analysis and Characterisation. Standard fire tests offered include: Cone Calorimetry, Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI), NBS Smoke Box and UL-94 vertical and horizontal tests. Techniques and tests offered under Polymer Processing include: twin-screw extruder, two-roll mill, high shear mixers, injection and compression moulding, along with appropriate tensile and impact test procedures. With respect to the techniques offered under Chemical Analysis and Characterisation, these include: ICP-AES spectrometry, AAS spectrometry, wet chemical analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, thermal analysis (TG/DSC), XRD, XRF, particle sizing and BET surface area determination.
