New online video clips show dramatic fire testing
Release date: 01 Oct 2009

Two new video clips featuring dramatic fire testing in a Cone Calorimeter and the methods used in the production of test samples can be viewed online. These clips are available on the Fireproof website (www.fire-proof.co.uk) and can also be searched for on YouTube.

The Fireproof laboratory carries out much of its work behind the scenes and whilst the final report is paramount, there is a natural curiosity for the customer to know how the investigation was performed. Through showing these video clips, which also feature the technologist who usually carries out the investigation, customers will gain an understanding of a complex technique.

“Some of the techniques we use can be difficult to explain in a few words or sentences so we decided instead to explain the laboratory techniques with images using short video clips,” comments Dr Wayne Lam, Laboratory Manager at Fireproof. “We wondered how tricky it would be to film the burning of a sample in the Cone Calorimeter but we are delighted with the results. It successfully shows our customers exactly what happens to their samples when they get into our laboratory.”

The laboratory believes that it is unique in its ability to process small quantities of polymer onsite, such as a few hundred grams, and conduct fire testing as well as physical and mechanical testing on the samples produced. This enables the laboratory to reformulate and test in a matter of minutes, thereby greatly speeding up the time to market. Depending upon the actual material being examined up to ten formulations can be tested in one day.
